How Much Data Do Apps Use When Traveling? (2026 Guide)

One of the most common questions before any international trip: "How many GB of eSIM data do I actually need?" The answer depends entirely on which apps you use and how much. Here's a breakdown of exactly how much data WhatsApp, Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Spotify, and YouTube Music consume; plus a calculator to help you find the right eSIM plan before you fly.

Typical Travel Profiles

If you'd rather skip the detail and just get a number; start here. You know roughly how you use your phone. Pick the profile that sounds like you.

Profile 4 Days 1 Week 2 Weeks
Light use; WhatsApp, maps, browsing social media ~1 GB ~2 GB ~4 GB
Moderate use; Above + 1 hour YouTube/Netflix (SD) per day ~3 GB ~5 GB ~10 GB
Heavy use; Video streaming, music, TikTok, video calls ~6 GB ~10 GB ~20 GB

For a more precise number, use the calculator at the bottom of this page.

WhatsApp

Messaging and photos cost almost nothing. You could text all day and barely dent 10 MB. Voice calls are where it starts to add up. Video calls, especially on HD, can drain your data faster than you'd expect: nearly half a gigabyte per hour.

Usage Type Per Minute Per Hour
Messages and photos ~0.1 MB ~3–5 MB
Voice call ~0.5 MB ~30 MB
Video call (standard) ~3 MB ~180 MB
Video call (HD) ~8 MB ~480 MB

If you want to catch up with family face-to-face, save it for Wi-Fi. Voice calls are fine for quick check-ins. To reduce call data usage: Settings → Storage and Data → Use Less Data for Calls.

FaceTime

FaceTime is the default choice for voice and video calls between Apple devices. Compared to WhatsApp, it tends to use slightly more data on video; noticeably so on HD. The exception is FaceTime Audio, which is surprisingly efficient: it actually uses less data than a standard WhatsApp voice call.

Usage Type Per Minute Per Hour
FaceTime Audio (voice only) ~0.3 MB ~18 MB
FaceTime Video (standard) ~5 MB ~300 MB
FaceTime Video (HD) ~10 MB ~600 MB

FaceTime Audio is a solid option for keeping in touch abroad; leaner than most alternatives. Video calls are another story: HD can hit 600 MB per hour, so save those for Wi-Fi.

Netflix

Streaming HD Netflix on mobile data is one of the fastest ways to burn through a data plan. One hour at HD quality costs roughly 1 GB; watch a couple of episodes each evening and you'll eat through 10 GB before the week is out. The good news: on a phone screen, the difference between HD and SD is much smaller than you think.

Video Quality Per Minute Per Hour Weekly (1hr/day)
Low quality ~5 MB ~300 MB ~2 GB
Standard (SD) ~12 MB ~700 MB ~5 GB
HD (720p) ~17 MB ~1 GB ~7 GB
Full HD (1080p) ~50 MB ~3 GB ~20 GB
4K / Ultra HD ~117 MB ~7 GB ~50 GB

Lower quality on mobile: Netflix → Settings → App Settings → Mobile Data Usage → Low or Medium. Better yet: download episodes at the hotel or over home Wi-Fi before you leave. Most flights have no Wi-Fi; download before you board, not after you land.

YouTube

YouTube automatically adjusts quality based on your connection speed. If your eSIM signal is strong, it'll jump to HD without asking, and quietly use up to 1 GB per hour. The fix is to override it manually and pick a quality that won't surprise you at the end of the trip.

Video Quality Per Minute Per Hour
240p (lowest) ~1.5 MB ~90 MB
360p ~3 MB ~180 MB
480p (SD) ~7 MB ~420 MB
720p (HD) ~15 MB ~900 MB
1080p (Full HD) ~25 MB ~1.5 GB

Set a default: YouTube Settings → Video Quality Preferences → On Mobile Networks → Lower Picture Quality. Or tap the three dots while a video is playing → Quality → pick 480p.

Instagram

Here's the thing about Instagram: even if you're just scrolling through photos, the app is preloading Reels and Stories in the background whether you watch them or not. You're spending data on content you never see. An hour of Reels can hit 480 MB, that adds up quickly over a week.

Usage Type Per Minute Per Hour
Feed browsing (photos) ~3 MB ~180 MB
Reels ~8 MB ~480 MB
Stories ~5 MB ~300 MB

Slow down the background preloading: Settings → Account → Mobile Data Use → Use Less Mobile Data. Or just save the scroll session for when you're on Wi-Fi.

TikTok

TikTok wins the data consumption contest by a wide margin. The infinite scroll is designed to have the next video ready before you've finished the current one, which means several videos are always pre-buffering in the background. Half a gigabyte per hour disappears without you noticing. If someone runs out of data mid-trip and can't figure out why, TikTok is usually the answer.

Usage Type Per Minute Per Hour
Standard viewing ~8 MB ~480 MB
High quality viewing ~15 MB ~900 MB

There's a data saver option: Profile → Settings → Content and Activity → Data Saver. But honestly, the cleanest solution is to keep TikTok for Wi-Fi entirely.

Spotify

Spotify is actually pretty reasonable. Three hours a day at normal quality uses around 130 MB; not a big deal for most trips. The issue is Very High quality (320 kbps), which can push that same three hours to 430 MB. Do that every day for a week and you've spent 3 GB just on music.

Audio Quality Per Minute Per Hour Daily (3 hours)
Low (24 kbps) ~0.18 MB ~10 MB ~30 MB
Normal (96 kbps) ~0.72 MB ~43 MB ~130 MB
High (160 kbps) ~1.2 MB ~72 MB ~216 MB
Very High (320 kbps) ~2.4 MB ~144 MB ~430 MB

The best move: download your playlists at home or at the airport lounge before you board. Most planes have no Wi-Fi and you'll want music for the flight anyway. To lower streaming quality: Settings → Audio Quality → Streaming on Mobile → Normal or Low.

YouTube Music

If you're used to Spotify, YouTube Music will feel slightly heavier on data. The reason is a bit odd: even when you're only listening to audio, the app loads video metadata in the background. It's just how it's built.

Quality Per Minute Per Hour Daily (3 hours)
Low ~0.5 MB ~30 MB ~90 MB
Normal ~1 MB ~60 MB ~180 MB
High ~2 MB ~120 MB ~360 MB

Premium subscribers can download tracks for offline listening; well worth doing before a long trip. Free users: Settings → Network Preferences → Stream on Wi-Fi only.

Google Maps: Download Before You Go

Most people overlook this one. Google Maps pulls map data from the internet every time you navigate, and if you're constantly asking for directions in an unfamiliar city, it adds up quietly. The fix takes about two minutes: download an offline map of your destination while you're still on Wi-Fi at home or at your hotel. After that, navigation runs entirely on GPS. GPS doesn't use mobile data.

Offline maps cover turn-by-turn navigation. Restaurant search, real-time traffic, and Street View still require internet.

To download: tap your profile photo → Offline maps → Select your own map.

General Tips to Use Less Data Abroad

  • Lower quality settings. Drop Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and YouTube Music to lower quality. On a phone screen the difference is barely noticeable, but your data consumption can drop by half.
  • Download everything before you fly. Most planes have no Wi-Fi. Use home, hotel, or café Wi-Fi to download Netflix episodes, Spotify playlists, and Google Maps offline maps before boarding.
  • Save TikTok and Instagram for Wi-Fi. These two apps are the most likely culprits when a data plan runs out unexpectedly. Do your scrolling when connected.
  • Turn off background app refresh. Stop apps from consuming data when you're not using them (iOS: Settings → General → Background App Refresh).
  • Limit WhatsApp video calls. Voice calls are fine for most check-ins. Save the face-to-face calls for Wi-Fi.
